Dilahirkan dengan nama mandarin 黄慧音,pinyin: Huang Hui Yin , Imee Ooi adalah orang Tionghoa yang lahir di Taiping, Malaysia. Bisa dikatakan ia tumbuh dan berkembang di keluarga musikal, Kakeknya adalah seorang penulis dari GuangDong, yang berpindah dan menetap di Malaysia, sedangkan ibunya adalah seorang Guru Piano, sehingga Imee dan saudaranya pun mahir dalam bermain piano.
Dalam jenjang pendidikannya sebagai pianis, Imee telah berhasil menyelesaikan studinya dengan jurusan Piano Klasik. Terinspirasi dengan Buddhism membuat Imee Ooi mengaransemen karya musiknya berdasarkan paritta, mantra maupun dharani Buddhist, salah satunya yaitu lagu Chant of Metta yang memiliki versi 3 bahasa yaitu Pali, Bahasa Inggris dan Mandarin.
